Why Me?

Infertility is not uncommon with women. Infact when a couple fails to conceive after one year in marriage, then all fingers points in the direction of the woman. But I will like to make something clear here, approximately one-third of infertility issues comes from women while another one-third from the men and the remaining one-third from the couple which is reffered to as unknown factors.

In this context, here are situations that cause infertility in women and I will address the first one in this article.

Anovulation simply means lack of ovulation or absence of ovulation. In every menstrual cycle, there is a day when an egg is released from the ovary. Ovulation is said to occur when this happens. Ovulation could be irregular called oligovulation. Both oligovulation and anovulation are forms of ovulatory dysfunction and accounts for infertility of about 40% of infertility in women.

Women with anovulation experience irregular periods. An irregular period may be defined as menstrual cycle that is either shorter than 21 days or longer than 36 days. It could also mean cycles that vary from month to month even though they are within the normal time frames. For example in January your cycle was 21 days, February it is 35 days, then March 30 days. You will rightly conclude that you have an irregular cycle.

So ask yourself

  • Are my periods normal?
  • Am I experiencing ovulation symptoms?

More Questions Than Answers.

How does anovulation cause infertility?

Couples that are fertile have about 25% chance of conceiving in  each month. So even with ovulation ,conception is not guaranteed each month. So when a woman is anovulatory, she will find it difficult to get pregnant because there  will be no eggs to be fertilized. And as such she has fewer chances of conceiving since she ovulates less frequently.

Also note that late ovulation does not produce quality eggs so fertilization may not be likely and if at all it happens then a miscarriage is imminent. It is important to note that irregular ovulation would mean the hormones are not doing fine. And this hormonal irregularities can lead to lack of fertile cervical mucus ,thinner or over thick endometrium ( area where the fertilized egg will implant), abnormal low levels of progesterone and a short luteal phase

Causes Of Anovulation

  • Extreme stress
  • PCOS which is the most common cause.
  • Low body weight
  •  Obesity
  •  Chronic mental illness such as depression.
  • Ovarian failure.
  • Advanced maternal age or  low ovarian reserves.
  • Thyroid dysfunction

Possible Treatments.

  • Change of lifestyle and diet.
  • Add more weight if you have low body weight.
  • If overweight  loose 10% to 20% of weight will be enough to restart ovulation.
  • Fertility drugs such as clomid which triggers ovulation of about 80% of anovulatory women and helps sabout 45% get pregnant within 6 months. If clomid dos not work there are other drugs that can be tried.
  • Women with PCOS can make do with insulin sensitizing drugs like metformin. This drug would help a woman start ovulation and it takes about 6 months of treatment to know if the metforming worked.
  • For women with premature ovarian failure or low ovarian reserve fertility drugs may not work due to low success rates. In such cases the doctor may suggest choosing an egg donor or the option of adoption.

So here you are with possible treatments for anovulation.Go ahead and make use of  it.

Remain ever blessed.
